YOAK x Terra Isis Gitane: YU NA MI SREFI
YU NA MI SREFI is a space where nothing is black and/or white. It finds you in the grey area, where the blueprint of our existence nestles. In this intimate installation, Terra Isis Gitane reflects on black fatherhood within Surinamese and Afrodiasporic families. They grapple with the lasting impacts of colonialism, also reflected in the so-called ‘broken family’ structures.
Terra researches why we hear so many stories of absent fathers but rarely look at what caused that absence. She also turns her lens toward the fathers who are present, those who show love and care while still carrying the weight of generational trauma. Through film, photography, and poetry, she gathers stories of absence, understanding, and acceptance, creating space for a deeper and more honest conversation.
Growing up without her Surinamese father, Terra felt that the black child in her never fully ripened. YU NA MI SREFI became a way to reconnect, to turn grief into growth. The work invites us to reflect on how we can heal and reshape the blueprint of our existence
About the Artist
Terra Isis Gitane is an interdisciplinary storyteller who explores the indefinite constructs of society. She found a way to translate feelings of estrangement brought on by societal expectations into growth and strength. With her unconventional approach to photography, poetry and film, she invites viewers to reconnect to a state of belonging to oneself, realising we are as much the plant as we are the seed.

Young OSCAM Art Kitchen (YOAK) offers young artists and creative producers space to present their work. Each exhibition is produced by a team of Young OSCAM trainees, guided by OSCAM’s program and production team. The initiative supports emerging makers in reaching a broad audience and creating lasting connections within and outside of the OSCAM network.

YOAK x Terra Isis Gitane: YU NA MI SREFI
YU NA MI SREFI is een ruimte waar niets zwart of wit is. Het is een grijs gebied, de plek waar de blauwdruk van ons bestaan ligt. In deze intieme installatie reflecteert Terra Isis Gitane op vaderschap binnen Surinaamse en Afro-diasporische gemeenschappen, en onderzoekt ze hoe de erfenis van het koloniale verleden doorwerkt in de zogenoemde ‘gebroken familie’-structuren.
Terra stelt de vraag waarom we zo vaak verhalen horen over afwezige vaders, maar zelden stilstaan bij de oorzaken van die afwezigheid. Tegelijkertijd richt ze haar blik op de vaders die wél aanwezig zijn: degenen die liefde en zorg tonen terwijl ze het gewicht van intergenerationeel trauma dragen. Met film, fotografie en poëzie verzamelt ze verhalen van afwezigheid, begrip en acceptatie, en creëert ze ruimte voor een dieper en open gesprek.
Opgegroeid zonder haar Surinaamse vader voelde Terra dat het zwarte kind in haar nooit volledig tot bloei kwam. YU NA MI SREFI werd een manier om opnieuw verbinding te maken en om verdriet om te zetten in groei. Het werk nodigt uit om te reflecteren op hoe we kunnen helen en de blauwdruk van ons bestaan opnieuw kunnen vormgeven.
Over de kunstenaar
Terra Isis Gitane is een interdisciplinair verhalenverteller die de ongrijpbare structuren van de samenleving onderzoekt. Ze vond een manier om gevoelens van vervreemding, veroorzaakt door maatschappelijke verwachtingen, te vertalen naar groei en kracht. Met haar eigenzinnige benadering van fotografie, poëzie en film nodigt ze de toeschouwer uit om opnieuw verbinding te maken met zichzelf, met het besef dat we zowel de plant als het zaad zijn.
Over Young OSCAM Art Kitchen
Young OSCAM Art Kitchen (YOAK) biedt jonge kunstenaars en creatieve producenten de ruimte om hun werk te presenteren. Elke tentoonstelling wordt ontwikkeld door een team van Young OSCAM trainees, begeleid door het programma- en productieteam van OSCAM. Het initiatief ondersteunt opkomende makers bij het bereiken van een breed publiek en het opbouwen van duurzame verbindingen binnen en buiten het OSCAM netwerk.
