Vanity Wezer – Where We Land

On Thursday, June 11, OSCAM presents Where We Land, the first solo exhibition by Paramaribo-based painter Vanity Wezer. The exhibition is presented as part of the Young OSCAM Art Kitchen (YOAK). Wezer explores how place shapes the way we inhabit ourselves, experience time, and find meaning in the everyday. In figurative paintings, she captures moments of landing: the quiet, everyday rhythms of life in Suriname. The exhibition marks a personal search for belonging, and at the same time a shared moment of landing for OSCAM in its new home. The exhibition is on view until October 10, 2026.

About the exhibition

Working with acrylic on canvas, Vanity Wezer brings together scenes from her daily life and the natural environment of Suriname. Her paintings reflect the climate, landscape, and rhythm of the country, showing how surroundings influence the way we experience time and inhabit space. Where We Land reflects on the importance of slowness and presence, and explores how a sense of origin and belonging can gradually take shape in the everyday.

About the artist

As a self-taught painter, Vanity Wezer explores how heritage lives on in gestures, routines, silences, and the spaces we occupy. Suriname becomes tangible in the humidity, light, and stillness of Wezer’s paintings. She captures the tension between knowing where you come from and the gradual process of coming home to yourself and your environment. Wezer is part of the interdisciplinary creative collective LFMC (Lowrey Foley McClane). Through collaborative projects, the collective offers a multi-rooted perspective within the Dutch creative community.

Young OSCAM Art Kitchen (YOAK)

OSCAM invites young artists, creative producers and curators to claim space, present their work and develop themselves as creative entrepreneurs in the Young OSCAM Art Kitchen. This exhibition supports young artists in reaching a broad public and creating lasting connections within the OSCAM network. The exhibition is produced by a team of Young OSCAM trainees guided by the YOAK Head of Program and Production, who guides them through the process of building an exhibition. With Young OSCAM Art Kitchen, OSCAM aims to stay in direct contact with the new generation of makers from various backgrounds and to prepare them for a professional future in the creative industry.

Vanity Wezer – Where We Land

Op donderdag 11 juni presenteert OSCAM Where We Land, de eerste solotentoonstelling van de in Paramaribo gevestigde schilder Vanity Wezer. De tentoonstelling wordt gepresenteerd binnen het kader van de Young OSCAM Art Kitchen (YOAK). Wezer onderzoekt hoe een plek invloed heeft op de manier waarop we onszelf bewonen, tijd ervaren en betekenis vinden in het alledaagse. In figuratieve schilderijen vangt ze momenten van landen: de stille, alledaagse ritmes van het leven in Suriname. De tentoonstelling markeert een persoonlijke zoektocht naar belonging, en tegelijkertijd ook een gezamenlijk moment van landen voor OSCAM in haar nieuwe thuis. De tentoonstelling is te zien tot en met 10 oktober.

Over de tentoonstelling

Met acrylverf op canvas brengt Vanity Wezer scènes uit haar dagelijks leven en de natuur in Suriname samen. Haar schilderijen reflecteren het klimaat, het landschap en het ritme van het land, en tonen hoe omgeving van invloed is op de manier waarop we tijd ervaren en ruimtes bewonen. Where We Land reflecteert op het belang van vertraging en aanwezigheid, en onderzoekt hoe een gevoel van oorsprong en verbondenheid zich geleidelijk kan vormen in het alledaagse.

Over de kunstenaar

Als autodidact schilder onderzoekt Vanity Wezer hoe erfgoed voortleeft in de gebaren, routines, stiltes en de ruimtes die we innemen. Suriname wordt voelbaar in de luchtvochtigheid, licht en stilte van Wezer’s schilderijen. Ze vangt de spanning tussen weten waar je vandaan komt en het geleidelijk thuiskomen in jezelf en je omgeving. Wezer maakt onderdeel uit van interdisciplinair creatief collectief LFMC (Lowrey Foley McClane). Door middel van samenwerkingsprojecten biedt het collectief een multi-geworteld perspectief aan de Nederlandse creatieve gemeenschap.

Young OSCAM Art Kitchen (YOAK)

Met Young OSCAM Art Kitchen (YOAK) nodigt OSCAM jonge makers uit om hun eigen plek te claimen, hun werk te presenteren en zich te ontwikkelen als creatieve ondernemers. Het initiatief ondersteunt opkomende makers bij het bereiken van een breed publiek en het opbouwen van duurzame verbindingen binnen en buiten het OSCAM netwerk. YOAK tentoonstellingen worden geproduceerd door een team van Young OSCAM trainees, begeleid door het hoofd van het traineeshipprogramma. Met YOAK blijft OSCAM in direct contact met een nieuwe generatie makers met verschillende achtergronden en ontstaat er ruimte voor visies die zelden een podium krijgen binnen het dominante culturele veld.
