Opening Watering a Black Garden

Experience joy as an intentional practice during the opening of Watering a Black Garden, presented by OSCAM and ARTNOIR. On Friday, March 6, we will open the exhibition together with the featured artist and curators.

Watering a Black Garden is a group exhibition reimagining joy as a radical act of tending and becoming. Eight female and non-binary artists from across the African diaspora, are brought together in Amsterdam in this powerful transatlantic collaboration. Artists include Maty Biayenda, Jeannette Ehlers, Ufuoma Essi, Shaniqwa Jarvis, Rachel Marsil, Aline Motta, Bernice Mulenga and Nengi Omuku.

Rooted in shared commitments to equity, visibility, and cultural exchange, this collaboration with OSCAM marks ARTNOIR’s debut in the Netherlands. The richness of the exhibition reflects the fullness of Black and Brown femme life. Across different disciplines, the artists resist invisibility while opening space for healing, connection, and becoming.

Program

During the opening, the inspiring Sylvana Simons will open the evening with a welcoming word, AFTER WERQ will provide vibrant rhythms, and artists share their work and perspectives in a panel moderated by ARTNOIR. Guests can enjoy food by Tabili, dedicated to meaningful gatherings centered around the table, and drinks by Madre Mezcal’s additive-free tequila from the highlands of Jalisco.

Ervaar vreugde als vorm van verzet tijdens de opening van Watering a Black Garden, gepresenteerd door OSCAM en ARTNOIR. Op vrijdag 6 maart wordt de tentoonstelling op feestelijke wijze geopend samen met de kunstenaars en curatoren.

Watering a Black Garden is een groepstentoonstelling die vreugde herinterpreteert als een radicale daad van groei en creatie. Acht vrouwelijke en non-binaire kunstenaars uit de Afrikaanse diaspora, komen in Amsterdam samen voor deze trans-Atlantische samenwerking. De tentoonstelling bevat werk van Maty Biayenda, Jeannette Ehlers, Ufuoma Essi, Shaniqwa Jarvis, Rachel Marsil, Aline Motta, Bernice Mulenga en Nengi Omuku.

Geworteld in een gedeelde inzet voor kansengelijkheid, zichtbaarheid en culturele uitwisseling, markeert deze samenwerking met OSCAM het debuut van ARTNOIR in Nederland. De rijkdom van de tentoonstelling weerspiegelt het Zwart vrouwelijk leven. Binnen hun verschillende disciplines verzetten de kunstenaars zich tegen onzichtbaarheid en maken ze ruimte voor herstel, verbondenheid en ontwikkeling.

Programma

Tijdens de opening zal de inspirerende Sylvana Simons de avond openen met een welkomstwoord. AFTER WERQ zorgt voor levendige ritmes en kunstenaars delen hun werk en perspectieven in een panelgesprek onder leiding van ARTNOIR. Gasten kunnen genieten van hapjes van Tabili, die zich richt op betekenisvolle bijeenkomsten rond de tafel, en drankjes van Madre Mezcal, tequila zonder toevoegingen uit de hooglanden van Jalisco.
