On Sunday September 20, Art Rocks Ambassador Sef launched the brand new track ‘News’ inspired by American artist Kahlil Joseph’s work ‘BLKNWS’ visible at Bonnefanten, HipHopHuis and in our own place, OSCAM.

How does a work of art sound? The national music competition Art Rocks challenges musicians to create a song, inspired by a work of art or historical object. During the museum round of this competition, the best submissions play their songs live in a large Dutch museum and have a chance of winning a final spot in the pop temple Paradiso. Want to sign up? Pop musician, rapper and Art Rocks ambassador Yousef ‘Sef’ Gnaoui, launched his brand new track ‘News’! This track is inspired by the work ‘BLKNWS’ by the American artist Kahlil Joseph. In this installation Joseph shows a moving, funny and ambitious vision of what media would look like if it were not ‘whitewashed and biased’, but more creative and above all more representative.

Sef on the inspiring artwork:
‘I have chosen the video installation BLKNWS by Kahlil Joseph. It’s kind of a continuous and ever-changing flow of how “black” is treated in the media and the news. It is therefore an almost inexhaustible source of inspiration and applicable to cultural minorities worldwide. I thought it would be a very interesting challenge to create something about that.’
