Troefcall Stories: Keti Koti special By OSCAM and Frascati Theater

During this special evening, the Friday before Keti Koti, we will not only make space for the game itself but also honor the rich cultural tradition from which it has emerged.
We’ll come together to play, celebrate, reflect, and connect through this beloved game that has been bringing people together for generations, or even driving them apart, at least temporarily. Because those who know it, know: tensions can run high during a night of troefcall. No worries, we always put fun and togetherness first.
For those unfamiliar: troefcall is a card game that originated in Suriname, possibly as a derivative of the Indian game court piece. It’s a true classic within the Surinamese community.
There will be snacks and drinks, and we’ll make sure everything runs according to the rules – so don’t even think about cheating! Of course, there’s a fantastic prize for the winners.
About troefcall
Interest in troefcall began to grow in Suriname from the 1970s onward. Several clubs were founded, and the number of so-called troefcalldrives (tournaments or competitions) increased significantly. Since 1970, troefcall has also been part of the annual Inter-Bank Tournament. In 1986, the Surinamese Troefcall Federation (STcB) was established to further organize and promote the game.
The game rules
Troefcall is played by four people, divided into two teams of two. Each player gets a total of 13 cards – jokers are removed beforehand.
The game begins with the caller receiving five cards. Based on these cards, the caller determines which suit will be the trump. As long as the caller hasn’t played their first card, the other players may not look at their cards.
The goal is to win tricks. When a team wins seven tricks and the opposing team none, it’s called a kap, earning 5 points. If a team wins seven tricks but the opposing team also wins some tricks, the team gets 2 points. Winning all 13 tricks is called a baunie – worth 15 points. The word baunie comes from the game tjall and means ‘total victory’.

Of je nu al jaren speelt, net begonnen bent, of vanavond voor het eerst meedoet: meld je aan met een team van twee of vier personen en kijk hoe ver jullie komen in het toernooi.
Tijdens deze speciale avond, de vrijdag vóór Keti Koti, maken we niet alleen ruimte voor het spel zelf, maar ook voor de rijke culturele traditie waaruit het is voortgekomen.
We komen samen om te spelen, te vieren, te reflecteren en verbinding te maken via dit geliefde spel dat al generaties lang mensen bij elkaar brengt of voor korte tijd juist uit elkaar drijft. Want wie het kent, weet: de spanningen kunnen flink oplopen tijdens een avondje troefcall. Geen zorgen, bij ons staat gezelligheid voorop.
Voor wie het niet kent: troefcall is een kaartspel dat in Suriname is ontstaan, mogelijk als afgeleide van het Indiase spel court piece. In de Surinaamse gemeenschap is dit een echte klassieker.
Er zijn hapjes en drankjes, en wij zorgen ervoor dat alles volgens de spelregels verloopt, dus waag het niet om vals te spelen! Uiteraard is er een geweldige prijs voor de winnaars.
Over troefcall
Vanaf de jaren 1970 groeide de belangstelling voor troefcall in Suriname. Er werden meerdere verenigingen opgericht en het aantal zogeheten troefcalldrives (toernooien of wedstrijden) nam flink toe. Sinds 1970 maakte troefcall ook deel uit van het jaarlijkse Inter Banken Toernooi. In 1986 werd de Surinaamse Troefcall Bond (STcB) opgericht om het spel verder te organiseren en te promoten.
De spelregels
Troefcall wordt gespeeld met vier personen, verdeeld over twee teams van twee. Elke speler krijgt in totaal 13 kaarten – de jokers worden vooraf uit het spel gehaald. Het spel begint met het uitdelen van vijf kaarten aan één speler, de caller. Op basis van deze kaarten bepaalt de caller welk symbool troef wordt. Zolang de caller zijn eerste kaart nog niet heeft gespeeld, mogen de andere spelers hun kaarten niet bekijken.
Het doel van het spel is om slagen te winnen. Wanneer een team 7 slagen behaalt en de tegenpartij geen enkele, dan spreekt men van een kap. Dit levert 5 punten op. Wanneer een team wél 7 slagen behaalt, maar de tegenpartij ook slagen maakt, krijgt het team 2 punten. Wie alle 13 slagen wint, speelt een baunie – goed voor 15 punten. Het woord bauniekomt uit het tjall-spel en betekent ‘totale winst’.
