Opening: Joy Soldiers: The Language
Experience a reinterpretation of the toy soldier as a powerful symbol of self-expression and community during the opening of OSCAM’s new exhibition Joy Soldiers: The Language by Black Childish. Opening on May 23, 2026, this solo exhibition is part of the opening program of OSCAM’s new location on Bijlmerplein 97.
In Black Childish’s hands, these toy soldiers transform from icons of conflict into expressions of identity and pride, under the title Joy Soldiers. Through digital sculpture, illustration, and large-scale 3D-printed works, Black Childish creates a toy army that reflects the world around him and celebrates his own everyday heroes.
Mickaël Mehala, also known as Black Childish, is a Martinican illustrator and digital artist based in Amsterdam. Drawing from Caribbean heritage, music, and global pop culture, his work expands the possibilities of 3D art while foregrounding themes of identity, cultural pride, and Black representation.
The full program of the opening will be revealed soon.
