YOAK x Maha Eljak
OSCAM is delighted to present ‘A Glimpse Of Us, Marhaba’ by artist Maha Eljak.
In the summer of 2022, artist, model and creator of DIY punk zine Mahazine, Maha Eljak (Mah-ha A’jack) returned to her homeland Sudan after only five years, with only a notebook and a camera. Aiming to live completely analogue and to be ‘within the moment’, in order to experience her beloved Sudan through her very own and tender perspective. Resulting in a reportage of memorable and endearing moments of intimate insights that are invisible to most outsiders. Through the exhibition ‘A Glimpse of Us, Marhaba’, Eljak welcomes you to that unknown world.
Being inspired by the punk era of the 1970’s, her Sudanese roots and daily life of societal frustration, artist Maha Eljak is known for her unconventional artistic point of view and continuously aims to seek for new manners and creative outlets to express herself. All in order to deal with the reality of everyday life and to abandon negative sensations. Utilising her passions and interest, the artist aims to establish a conscious and aware world in which she primarily evokes the belief that she herself, as are many others, is more than her religion or exterior.
Eljak aspires her artistic body of work to contribute to the urgency of creating, hoping it will eventually strengthen one’s own creative belief. Proclaiming that each has the freedom to develop and create their own passions and is applauded to follow these accordingly, without any notion of responsibility to another. She urges each to follow their gut feeling, ‘the one that is always right’.
In light of the recent and unfortunate circumstances in Sudan, OSCAM is donating a generous amount of €666, including of all yields of ticket sales, to SAPA. To help those in need.
