Black Childish – Joy Soldiers: The Language

OSCAM presents Joy Soldiers: The Language, a solo exhibition by Mickaël Mehala, known as Black Childish, who reinterprets the classic image of toy soldiers as a powerful symbol of self-expression and community. 

Black Childish, known for collaborations with WeTransfer and Het Nieuwe Instituut, translates influences from the African diaspora and Black pop culture into a distinctive visual language. With works reaching up to two meters in height, he calls attention to the power and visibility of everyday heroes. The exhibition opens on May 23, 2026, as part of the opening program of OSCAM’s new location and is on view until August 30. 

About the exhibition

During their childhood, many children encounter toy soldiers. Rooted in imagery of war, these figures offer little recognition to children from Afro-diasporic communities, and instead symbolize destruction. In Black Childish’s hands, these icons of conflict transform into expressions of identity and pride, under the title Joy Soldiers. Through digital sculpture, illustration, and large-scale 3D-printed works, Black Childish creates a toy army that reflects the world around him and celebrates his own everyday heroes. The exhibition offers Black and Caribbean communities a form of representation that is much needed.

About the artist

Mickaël Mehala, also known as Black Childish, is a Martinican illustrator and digital artist based in Amsterdam. His practice merges 2D and 3D techniques to create joyful, bold, and expressive characters that exist between illustration, sculpture, and digital art. Drawing from Caribbean heritage, music, and global pop culture, Black Childish creates vibrant figures that often appear humorous, surreal, or poetic. By experimenting with textures, digital sculpting, and visual imperfections, the artist intentionally blurs the boundaries between digital and physical media. His work expands the possibilities of 3D art while foregrounding themes of identity, cultural pride, and Black representation.

Friends of OSCAM Breakfast Club

Black Childish returns to OSCAM with his latest exhibition, Joy Soldiers: The Language. He previously showed his work at OSCAM in the exhibition Digital Expressions: Black Joy in 2023. Now in our new location, at Bijlmerplein 97, he uses the space to present an exhibition that connects with our neighborhood. To mark this moment at our new location, OSCAM is organizing the Friends of OSCAM Breakfast Club on the three Saturdays after the exhibition opening, where local residents can get a coffee and croissant for one euro. More will be revealed about this soon.

Black Childish – Joy Soldiers: The Language

OSCAM presenteert Joy Soldiers: The Language, een solotentoonstelling van Mickaël Mehala, beter bekend als Black Childish, die het klassieke beeld van speelgoedsoldaten herinterpreteert als een krachtig symbool van zelfexpressie en gemeenschap. 

Black Childish, bekend van samenwerkingen met onder andere WeTransfer en Het Nieuwe Instituut, zet invloeden uit de Afrikaanse diaspora en Zwarte popcultuur om in een uitgesproken en karakteristieke beeldtaal. Met werken die oplopen tot wel twee meter hoog, vraagt hij aandacht voor de kracht en zichtbaarheid van alledaagse helden. De tentoonstelling opent op 23 mei 2026 als onderdeel van het openingsprogramma van de nieuwe locatie van OSCAM en is te zien tot 30 augustus

Over de tentoonstelling

Tijdens hun jeugd komen veel kinderen speelgoedsoldaatjes tegen. Deze figuren, geworteld in oorlogsbeelden, bieden weinig herkenning aan kinderen uit Afro-diasporische gemeenschappen en staan symbool voor vernietiging. In de handen van Black Childish veranderen deze iconen van conflict in uitingen van identiteit en trots, onder de titel Joy Soldiers. Met digitale sculptuur, illustratie en grootschalige 3D-geprinte werken creëert Black Childish een speelgoed leger dat de wereld om hem heen weerspiegelt en zijn eigen alledaagse helden viert. De tentoonstelling biedt zwarte en Caribische gemeenschappen een vorm van representatie die nog te vaak ontbreekt.

Over de kunstenaar

Mickaël Mehala, ook bekend als Black Childish, is een illustrator en digitaal kunstenaar uit Martinique, gevestigd in Amsterdam. Zijn werk combineert 2D- en 3D-technieken om vrolijke, gedurfde en expressieve personages te creëren die zich bevinden op het snijvlak van illustratie, sculptuur en digitale kunst. Geïnspireerd door Caribisch erfgoed, muziek en wereldwijde popcultuur, creëert Black Childish levendige figuren die humoristisch, surrealistisch of poëtisch overkomen. Door te experimenteren met texturen, digitale sculptuur en visuele imperfecties, vervaagt de kunstenaar bewust de grenzen tussen digitale en fysieke media. Zijn werk verruimt de mogelijkheden van 3D-kunst en belicht thema’s als identiteit, culturele trots en de representatie van de Zwarte identiteit.

Friends of OSCAM Breakfast Club

Black Childish keert terug naar OSCAM met zijn nieuwste tentoonstelling, Joy Soldiers: The Language. Eerder exposeerde hij al bij OSCAM in de tentoonstelling Digital Expressions: Black Joy in 2023. Nu, op onze nieuwe locatie aan het Bijlmerplein 97, gebruikt hij de ruimte voor een tentoonstelling die ons verbindt met onze buurt. Om deze mijlpaal in onze nieuwe locatie te vieren, organiseert OSCAM op de drie zaterdagen na de opening van de tentoonstelling de Friends of OSCAM Breakfast Club, waar buurtbewoners voor één euro een kop koffie met croissant kunnen krijgen.
