OSCAM YOMU space presents opening exhibition Reimagining Okanisi Perspectives

In our YOMU space, run by our Young OSCAM trainee Zergei Samson there is always something happening.

We are thrilled to invite you to the opening of Reimagining Okanisi Perspectives Saturday 8 March from 6.00PM. This unique exhibition celebrates the vibrant culture, history, and resilience of the Aucan Maroon community of Diitabiki.

At its core, breathtaking textile works created by a collective of the Aucan Maroon community – mentored by Iris Kensmil & Marcel Pinas- bridge past and present through traditional techniques like embroidery, appliqué, dyeing, and linoleum printing.

The experience is further enriched by Fiiman Pikin, a compelling film by Beryl Pinas & Lennox Schmidt, delving into themes of belonging, memory, and cultural roots through the fictional character Irvin and his dialogue with Mama Sranan (Mother Suriname).

With traditional pangis from Thomas Polime’s collection, photographs, and moving images, this exhibition invites you to reimagine the Okanisi perspective and engage with a story that is both deeply personal and universally resonant.

Curated by Wooko Makandie, with support from Mondriaan Fund & Ferrier Fund.
